Severe Service Flow Control

The Role of Double Ball Valves in Modern Mining

Critical Challenge: Mining and mineral processing involve highly abrasive slurries, corrosive chemical reagents, high-pressure hydrotransport, and aggressive leaching processes. Standard single-barrier valves rapidly degrade under these conditions, leading to catastrophic leaks, environmental hazards, and costly downtime.

In modern extractive metallurgy, the demand for efficiency and safety has driven the adoption of Double Ball Valves (also known as Double Block and Bleed or DBB valves). Unlike conventional configurations, a double ball valve integrates two independent obturators (balls) within a single valve body, providing dual-barrier isolation. This design allows operators to block both upstream and downstream pressure while venting (bleeding) the cavity between them, verifying bubble-tight seal integrity without interrupting the system flow.

Whether handling copper concentrates, iron ore slurries, gold tailings, or sulfuric acid solutions in high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) plants, these valves offer unparalleled safety. By reducing the footprint and weight of the piping system compared to installing two separate valves in series, SLVCN's integrated double ball valves minimize leakage paths and optimize plant layout space.

Engineering Applications

Critical Mining & Mineral Processing Applications

⚙️

High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL)

HPAL autoclaves operate under intense pressures (up to 50 bar) and extreme temperatures (over 250°C) using highly concentrated sulfuric acid to extract nickel and cobalt. Double ball valves made of exotic forged alloys (such as Titanium, Duplex, or Hastelloy) with metal-to-metal seating are essential to isolate the feed and discharge lines safely under these severe corrosive conditions.

🌊

Slurry Hydrotransport Pipelines

Transporting mineral concentrates (e.g., copper, iron ore, coal) over long distances requires high-pressure pipelines. Slurries contain hard suspended solids that cause continuous impingement and erosion. Forged DBB trunnion-mounted ball valves with tungsten carbide coatings resist wear, maintaining reliable bubble-tight shut-off for years.

☣️

Tailings Management & Dewatering

Managing toxic mining tailings requires absolute zero-leakage control to prevent environmental contamination. Double block and bleed ball valves provide a dual-barrier system that guarantees zero emissions. The integrated bleed port allows operators to flush out trapped particulate matter, preventing the solid buildup that typically jams standard valves.

Uncompromising Safety and Reliability

Designed for High Pressure, High Temperature, and Cryogenic Applications, SLVCN valves are widely used in long-distance oil & gas transmission pipelines, LNG storage and regasification terminals, offshore platforms and deepwater projects, power plants, refineries, compressor stations, and high-pressure chemical processing units. Whether handling flammable media, corrosive fluids, sour service media (H₂S), ultra-low temperatures, or extreme differential pressures, our valves ensure stable operation, bubble-tight shut-off, and maximum system safety in accordance with international sealing and performance standards.

Safety and reliability are embedded in every design. Our forged ball valves are equipped with Double Block and Bleed (DBB) structures, anti-blowout stems, fire-safe designs in accordance with API 607 / API 6FA, anti-static devices, emergency sealing systems, and pressure-balanced seating structures suitable for high differential pressure operation. Valves can be designed with SPE (Single Piston Effect) or DPE (Double Piston Effect) seat configurations based on application requirements. For sour service environments, materials and sealing systems comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements.
